Bernie’s BestExample audit · prepared by Searchflex

Example · How we would audit a University page

The Australian Shepherd guide. Products start 71% of the way down.

A worked example on one real page, read from the live site on 27 October 2026. We would run the same audit across all of University, starting with the pages that carry the most traffic.

Page audited: bernies.com/university/dog-breed/australian-shepherd/. We only read the page. Nothing on it has been changed.

1 · What we measured

A long, well-researched guide with one product block.

Counted from the article itself, not the site menu or footer.

11,500words, roughlyFrom the Overview to Dig Deeper.
36links to University pagesMostly in the last three sections.
53links to outside sitesBreed clubs, vets and research.
18links to the storeAll 18 sit in one block, six products, three links each.

2 · Where the links sit

The page, drawn to scale.

Each block is a section, as wide as it is long. Tap one to see what it links to.

Bar height inside each block shows the share of links by type. Word counts are from the live page on 27 October 2026.

3 · What is already working

Good foundations to build on.

4 · Where we would improve it

Four commercial gaps we can measure.

1

Products arrive late

The first 8,102 words, 71% of the page, have no link to the store. All six products appear in a single block after that.

Fix: a short product suggestion beside the section it relates to, and a shortcut to the product block near the contents list.

2

The first product doesn’t match the page

In the article text, before the product block:

41 mentions of coat9 of skin2 of joint4 of hip0 of digestion

The block opens with Perfect Poop, a digestive product. OMG! Omegas Oil is headed “Care Beneath the Coat” in Bernie’s own copy.

Fix: lead with the products that fit what the page is about, and place them next to those sections.

3

Questions link away

The Related Questions section is about 2,800 words long. Its 10 links all go to outside sites. None go to a University page or a product.

Fix: answer each question, then link to the University page and product that go deeper.

4

Little help for search engines

The structured data we found is BreadcrumbList, Organization, WebPage and WebSite. We found no Article or question-and-answer markup.

Fix: we would check whether Article and FAQ markup suits the page, and add it where it does.

Mention counts are a rough proxy for topic. Search Console will show which searches bring people to this page, and that comes in week 1.

5 · What we would change

The same page, with a route to the store.

A simplified view of the page. Switch between today and our proposal.

6 · How this scales

From one page to all of University.

  1. Pull the dataEvery University page, with its Search Console clicks and the orders it leads to in GA4 and Shopify.
  2. Score each pageWhere its links go, which products fit its topic, and how far down the first product sits.
  3. Fix the biggest firstApply the template to the pages with the most traffic at stake: product suggestions, University links, answers that link on.
  4. Measure and testClicks from University to the store, and orders by landing page, with tests where traffic supports them.

Our crawl found that only 1 of 339 University pages links to a product in its body copy. This page’s store links sit in a separate product block, not in the copy.

Not yet in this example: Search Console and Shopify data for this page. We would add both in week 1.
